He/Him
Writer, Editor, Storyteller • Cinephile • Board Gamer
Contributing Writer: BoardGameQuest

I emerged from a dark room and spilled out into the writing community in 2012, founding a fiction writing group at Village Books and facilitating the group for over three years. Since that time, I've worked with more than fifty writers from the community and been a member of five unique writing groups, two of which I'm still heavily invested in. I've edited several novels to completion – genres including general and historical fiction, speculative (sci-fi and fantasy) and young adult – and numerous short stories. I've also edited two wonderful children's stories that I hope see the light of day beyond the realm of a writing group.

I specialize in developmental editing, with a focus on novel, novella, and short story writing. That said, I’m interested to learn more about your project, whatever it may be, to see if I can assist. Please visit Services below to explore available editing packages.

I chose to venture into freelance editing in 2018 to kick-start a professional career assisting writers in the community and beyond. As a fiction writer myself, I invest wholeheartedly in the development of quality story and can't wait to meet all of the brave souls who are ready to take the next step with their projects. In 2019, I co-founded an online literary journal, HamLit, as a platform to continue to develop and showcase local writing talents.

When I'm not writing or editing, you may find me at the movies (visit my film odyssey at Letterboxd), reading a book while walking across the street, or playing board games with friends and the community. My professional career highlights include operations management, administration specialization, and project leadership. I received a Communications degree from Western Washington University and Bellingham has been a home to me since 1998.

Services

NOW ACCEPTING: General Fiction/Speculative/Young Adult fiction projects.
Refer to my New Client Guide (click below) for more information.

Option 1:
story Assessment

Up to 5,000 words - $55.00 Flat Fee
Above 5,000 Words - $11.00 per 1,000 words*

Struggling with big-picture issues like structure, point of view, or characterization? Is your story and/or novel in need of a new set of eyes? Superb! The Story Assessment will help provide direction for your next revision. This option provides proofreading and feedback.

I'll provide feedback on the following:

  • Voice/Style

  • Plot

  • Pacing

  • Characterization

This feedback will also identify:

  • Inconsistencies

  • POV issues

  • Conceptual issues

This feedback will be sent to you in the form of a letter, which will list areas for improvement, as well as highlight areas of success. It does not include chapter-by-chapter breakdown nor a sentence-by-sentence line edit.

Option 2:
developmental edit

$15.00 per 1,000 words* (Minimum 25,000 words)

Is your story and/or novel in need of intense review? Having issues with character or plot? Are the structures and arcs not connecting? Let me dig. This option provides line editing, copy editing, in-depth improvements to language usage, organization, phrasing, and feedback on content. For fiction, this also includes a critique of plot development and characterization.

I'll provide feedback on the following:

  • Voice/Style

  • Plot

  • Pacing

  • Characterization

  • Character Arc

Each chapter will be assessed to identify your strengths and weaknesses and how each story element could be developed to improve the success of your story. This breakdown will focus on the meat of your story and will include in-line editing to improve each sentence.

This feedback will also identify:

  • Plot holes

  • Inconsistencies

  • Lack of conflict

  • Necessity of story elements

  • Whether it's entertaining

  • Areas of confusion

This feedback will be sent to you in a document that includes a summarized overview and a chapter-by-chapter breakdown, which will list areas for improvement, as well as highlight areas of success. I welcome any additional information requested to be added this document. Note that Historical Fiction projects will not include fact checking, as I’m not qualified in this regard.

*per 1,000 words count is rounded either up or down, depending on final word count - i.e. a 35,450 word document would be billed at the 35,000 word count, whereas a 49,850 word document would be billed at the 50,000 word count.
